Customer project: Spiral staircase around a tree

Our customer JK Stensby and his family have used the GTS Side to build a fascinating spiral staircase around a tree – take a look at the result!

We wanted to build a place to meditate and realised that true meditation lay in the building itself :)

GTS Side – build on the safe side

The GTS Side (also known as the ‘Paddle TAB’) is the flexible solution for side-cantilevered beams – ideal for stairs, decks and smaller platforms. With an additional strut or second beam bracket, you can create a highly stable construction that transfers the force directly into the tree.

Compared to rigid triangles, it offers significantly more freedom – tree curves and thick branches can be easily bypassed. Tree Braces are perfect for tricky spots or when heavily loaded platform parts need to be supported. Also a great solution for constructing floating tree trails in the forest!

The vertical load capacity of the GTS Side alone is 500 kg in softwood and up to 1,200 kg in hardwood (e.g. maple) – the load capacity of an entire Tree Brace depends heavily on its design.

Multifunctional solution

The lateral fastening of the beams with the GTS Side (aka. ‘Paddle TAB’) opens up many possibilities for supporting smaller platform parts such as stairs or cantilevered corners.

But entire platforms can also be built with our kits!

Avoid tilting

If the Tree Brace is loaded far out with a large load, an unfavourable pull-out force is exerted on the GTS Side. This can be easily prevented by a counter bearing, which stops this tilting movement.

More information can be found on our Support Structure page.

Avoid rotation

The bracket design is also not designed for excessive lateral loads, as this could cause the GTS Side sheet metal to bend or the screw to loosen in the tree. No big deal, but it must be taken into account during planning ;)

Example with accessories

Here is a classic application of the GTS Side: A heavy staircase is supported with a relatively short joist (approx. 1,5 m (4,9 ft)). The staircase can be finely adjusted later using the height-adjustable strut.
