Whether high up in the trees or cosy on the ground, these guys know how to build adventures out of wood! In 2020, Tobias and his mate Fabian founded Treehouse Company in Rülzheim in southern Palatinate. Since then, they have built eight treehouses and several tiny houses. They are also experts in building high ropes climbing parks throughout Germany.

Hey Tobias, you've been a professional treehouse builder for several years now – how did that come about?

I've dreamed of building treehouses ever since I first saw Pete Nelson and his projects on television. At that time, climbing and building at heights was already part of my everyday life as a construction manager in a high ropes course. No two trees or treehouses are alike, and that's what appeals to me.

The dream probably started much earlier... you were probably one of those lucky treehouse kids from the countryside ;)

Yes, that's right. Even when I was little, we used to build camps every summer with the neighbour's children, including two treehouses. Back then, we only had old boards from the bulky waste as materials, but we were able to give free rein to our creativity when building.

And your first real treehouse project – what was the dream, what was the reality?

Our first treehouse was a mega project right from the start: two storeys, large outdoor terrace. The dream would have been to suspend the entire structure – unfortunately, the existing trees weren't big enough, so we had to build the treehouse on stilts.

What do you recommend for treehouse beginners – lots of planning or just start building?

Despite careful planning, treehouse novices will probably be confronted with a few surprises on the construction site. With increasing experience, many pitfalls can be avoided during the planning stage.

What should beginners definitely avoid?

Anyone who builds without a building permit risks getting into trouble with the authorities if the treehouse exceeds a certain size – so it's advisable to familiarise yourself with local regulations at an early stage.

What is the most important thing when building with wood?

It's essential to allow the wood room to breathe and to consider water drainage – standing water on wood is poison for the material.

One intimate question to finish: how was your first night in the treehouse?

The first night in a treehouse was adventurous. A storm came up, so the whole house swayed with the trees in the wind. Being so close to nature and yet still warm inside was just brilliant.

Thank you, Tobi, for the nice interview and continued success!
